Hi! My name is Jeff Lesperance, and I’m the JML behind JML Astrophotography. I started this website back in 2016 to share both my astrophotos and general love for astronomy with anyone who cares.
Like many other astrophotographers, I’ve been a major space nerd for as long as I can remember. One night though, I thought “hey can I stick a camera up to my eyepiece?” And that’s what started my plummet down the rabbit hole that is astrophotography. Since then, I’ve taken tons of photos of nebulae, galaxies, supernovae, most of the solar system planets and even exoplanet (transits)! Practice definitely makes progress.
Currently, I’m in college working towards bachelor’s degrees in physics and astrophysics, with future plans to earn a Ph.D in planetary science. My primary research interest is in transmission spectroscopy of exoplanets (primarily earth-like ones) to study what their atmospheres are made of, which has implications for the habitability of that exoplanet. That said, I’m equally interested in exploration of distant minor planets, those being objects like Pluto, Sedna, Eris, Makemake and other Kuiper Belt objects. Being an astrophysics student, I enjoy learning as much as I can about the objects I photograph as much as I enjoy photographing them. As part of that, whenever I publish a new photo, I also discuss whatever interesting research has recently been published related to the photo’s subject at the time of posting.
Aside from doing astrophotography, I’m also a clarinetist, novice guitarist, cat-lover, glassblower, and just a dude who is obsessed with the night. Thanks for visiting my website, I hope you enjoy my photos, and clear skies!
