Markarian’s Chain of Galaxies is a cluster of galaxies located in Virgo. The cluster was discovered in batches, with Charles Messier discovering the first 2 (M84 and M86) in 1781. The other galaxies were discovered by William Hershey. The cluster was eventually named after Armenian astrophysicist Benjamin Markarian, who discovered that at least 7 of the galaxies in the group move coherently, while others are likely superimposed by chance, in the 1960s.
