One of the largest nebulae in the sky, NGC 7000’s namesake is pretty obvious, as it resembles the continent of North America, complete with the Gulf of Mexico. The nebula is about 10x the size of the full moon but has such a low surface brightness that it can’t be seen with the unaided eye except for under extremely dark skies. The nebula’s red color is due to ionized hydrogen emissions and is located about 2,600 light-years from Earth near the bright star Deneb in Cygnus.
